Job Description

EdPlus is currently seeking a highly-motivated and energetic Instructional Designer. Under general direction, assists faculty and/or other subject matter experts in the design and development of learning materials using multiple instructional technologies and applying best practices in teaching and learning. This Instructional Designer is culturally sensitive and is passionate about global, accessible and online learning opportunities through the development of online educational assets (i.e. courses, modules, articles, podcasts, videos) that take advantage of instructional technologies and apply the best practices in digital teaching and learning.

This Instructional Designer role will focus on Starbucks Global Academy (SGA), a global learning management system operated by ASU with and for Starbucks. The Instructional Designer will take strategic direction from leadership to execute content development and course build projects for Starbucks Global Academy, helping advance the greater Starbucks – ASU relationship.

Working Environment

EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.

  • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Regular review of completed tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field. Three (3) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operating learning management systems, on both the front-end and back-end of the system; specifically Open edX.
  • Experience with graphic design, to create inforgrphic and graphic learning objects.
  • Experience engaging with subject matter experts and other stakeholders to interpret and develop content into a cohesive curriculum and then a digital, online course.
  • Experience working with highly visible projects, often with time-sensitive deadlines or shifting priorities.
  • Experience in building relationships with key and senior stakeholders, including interpreting ideas to develop specific project deliverables.
  • Experience with systems thinking, to develop and refine templates and processes related to instructional design tasks.
  • Experience with global projects, including translation, localization, and maintaining a multi-location course library.

Essential Duties

  • Designs, develops and delivers online professional development instructional materials with interactive and multimedia technology-driven components consistent with established design and development processes to ensure flexibility and reusability.
  • Recommends effective and creative uses of technologies to enhance instruction and create new learning environments.
  • Identifies and communicates contextual best practices for applying teaching and learning theories to curriculum design.
  • Designs, develops and implements evaluation procedures to assess effectiveness of using technologies in teaching and learning processes.
  • Utilizes software such as web page development, desktop publishing, image editing and presentation tools to develop custom products to meet user needs.
  • Edits guides and other instructional materials for grammar, clarity, consistency and accuracy of content.
  • Works collaboratively with project team members and developers; editing, reviewing and evaluating instructional materials; assisting with embedding and formatting learning objects; and providing quality assurance testing and post production work; adapts instructional materials for online delivery.
  • Applies adult learning theory with instructional design methodology while utilizing appropriate technology to develop and design instructional materials.
  • Remains abreast of technology directions, initiatives and trends within scope of expertise to provide ideas, guidance and recommendations.
  • Coordinates or assumes other duties and projects as assigned or directed.
