CodePath is a national non-profit that is reprogramming higher education to create the most diverse generation of software engineers, CTOs, and founders. We deliver industry-vetted courses and career support centered on the needs of Black, Latino/a, Indigenous, and low-income students. Our students train with senior engineers, intern at top companies, and rise together to become the tech leaders of tomorrow.

Founded in 2017, CodePath has taught over 20,000 students and delivered courses across over 85 universities. We are supported by some of the largest and most well-respected organizations, including Andreessen Horowitz, Blue Meridian Partners, Cognizant Foundation, Comcast, Google, Meta, Salesforce, Walmart, and Workday, among others.

We are currently targeted to serve 10,000+ students a year nationwide as of 2023, and are planning to scale up to ~100,000 students a year by 2030.

About the Role

Compensation: $150,000 to $160,000 per year

The Director of Learning will spearhead CodePath’s Learning team in revolutionizing post-secondary computer science education. Working in tandem with senior leadership, this role focuses on elevating graduation rates and fostering prosperous careers in technology for students from underserved communities. Through close collaboration with organizational leaders and team members, the Director of Learning will elevate the quality and efficiency of CodePath’s educational experiences to unprecedented levels.

The Director of Learning will own the strategy and manage the implementation underpinning the pedagogy, technology, and systems central to our students’ personalized education. Joining a team that currently serves up to 10,000 students each year, they will be responsible for enhancing the impact of our curriculum, scaling the reach of our programs to 100,000 students annually, reducing the cost of each additional student served, continually improving our operational infrastructure, and delivering a student experience that is 100x better than our current benchmark for success.

Our ideal candidate possesses a first-principles understanding of training college students to become top-tier software engineers. This position is perfect for someone with a strong background in both software engineering and education, who is deeply connected to the tech industry, and who can manage multiple, interconnected teams of people with differing skill sets. The role also involves pioneering the integration of mastery-based learning with cutting-edge AI technologies, amplifying the educational journey for both students and educators. Key Success Metrics

  • Industry-Ready Graduates: Enhance the level of rigor of industry readiness among our graduates for immediate career success
  • Program Capacity Expansion: Scale our programs’ capacity from 10,000 to 20,000 students in 2024, and to 100,000 students by 2029
  • Efficiency in Scaling: Improve cost efficiency in program delivery while increasing program scale, targeting an incremental cost of $500 per student or less
  • Uniform Quality Assurance: Maintain consistent, high-quality student experiences across all participating universities
  • Personalized Student Experience: Foster greater personalization within each student’s journey by combining mastery learning with 1-on-1 tutoring

Responsibilities

  • Build strategic roadmaps for curriculum development, program implementation, and program operations that improve the quality, reach, impact, consistency, and scalability of our learning experiences
  • Oversee the implementation of your strategic roadmap, utilizing empirical evidence to track effectiveness, inform decisions, increase operational efficiency, and enhance educational outcomes
  • Leverage innovative software engineering and product management principles to effectively guide the design, development, and delivery of high-quality coding courses and programs that cater to diverse student populations
  • Conduct experiments that result in standardized learning methods, course materials, and engagement tactics that scale with fidelity to hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States
  • Use first-principles and systems thinking to analyze complex problems, decompose challenges into discrete components, identify root causes, develop inventive solutions, and use data-driven reasoning to balance the needs of the Learning team, the organization, and the broader ecosystem
  • Present complex ideas clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders across the organization—from marketing to engineering to human resources—leveraging relationships to identify problems, analyze solutions, and make decisions
  • Collaborate with a fast-moving senior leadership team to ideate on strategy, develop quarterly OKRs, track project dependencies, parallelize workflows, create project forecasts, and adapt to changing KPIs
  • Lead the Learning team’s 3 team managers and 14 cross-functional experts with clarity and empathy as they design, develop, implement, and operate our programs; manage our diverse community of educators; support and measure student performance; create and enforce program policies; and more
  • Perform people-focused talent management tasks such as identifying competency gaps, defining new and existing roles, interviewing and hiring candidates, growing professional skill sets within yourself and your team, setting the bar for excellence, and rewarding individuals when excellence is achieved

Qualifications

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in computer science
  • At least 5 years of software engineering and system designing experience
  • At least 5 years of classroom teaching and curriculum development experience
  • At least 5 years of people management experience, plus experience leading teams of 15+ people
  • Experience working at multiple tech companies, from established enterprises to early-stage startups
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, making sense of ambiguity, creating playbooks from scratch, and rolling up sleeves to get the job done
  • Excels at building relationships and collaborating with a wide range of cross-functional stakeholders
  • Communicates concisely and effectively; highlights the hard work of others; and takes accountability for mistakes
  • Fosters both high performance and a high degree of psychological safety at work through constructive feedback, empathy, and active listening
  • Has exceptional project and product management skills; a keen attention to details; and the ability to juggle multiple competing priorities
  • Demonstrates a growth mindset, autonomy, and self-motivation at a 100% remote company
  • Can oversee a remote team in the Philippines, ideally between 9:00 and 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time
  • Have enthusiasm for and belief in our mission and vision 

Pay range

$150,000—$160,000 USD
