A Little Bit About Our Team

The Product Training team for Volvo Penta North America—headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia—is responsible for creating and instructing technical training and maintaining educational curriculums for our retail dealers and OEMs. 

Who are you?

Our Product Training team is looking for someone to serve as an Intern with their department in Chesapeake, Virginia this summer from May 20, 2024 to August 9, 2024. 

As an intern, you will be responsible for providing support—project-related as well as day to day—to our Product Training team. Some of your core responsibilities will include:

  •   Supporting work and completing tasks within a Learning Management System (LMS) and other learning platforms:
    • Add/remove users from rosters
    • Close out classes
    • Monitor prerequisites prior to adding to rosters
    • Support training sessions and scheduling, communications, reporting
    • Contact students should sessions be moved and/or canceled
    • Troubleshoot
  • Shadow Senior-level instructors in class preparation, and assist in development of instructional material, as needed
  • Implementing and tracking the effectiveness of eLearning and instructor-led courses
  • Assist with miscellaneous special projects. Working with eLearning Specialist and instructors to define and document business goals for each project.
  • Assist with creation of electronic content to support the learning objectives.
  • Provide general support and assistance to senior members of the Product Training Team to include responding to customer emails and calls as needed.

As an intern, you will be afforded the opportunity to work with some exceptionally skilled colleagues as well as experience some truly exciting challenges that will benefit you both professionally and personally.

Key Competencies

To be successful in this role, you will need to be both a strong team player and proactive self-starter who likes to take initiative and has great attention to detail. You must also have excellent interpersonal, judgement & decision-making skills.

We would also like you to have background in basic instructional design, familiarity with digital learning products, and understand graphics manipulation and design, sound, and video elements to potentially assist with creating educational videos that will be used by the Product Training team in their session. 

The Basics

As with all of our intern positions here in Volvo Penta, you will need an eagerness to learn, like to work independently and have a readiness for responsibility, as well as have excellent organizational skills and acute attention to detail.

Experience with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook as well as database programs is required as is experience with using and running basic office equipment—phone, copier, fax, etc.—is necessary.  

Excellent, professional communication skills—both written and oral—is needed in order to successfully communicate with both external and internal customers. 

Education & Experience

Must Haves:

  • Pursuing a BA/BS degree in Education, Training Development, Instructional Design, Adult Education, or related field, at an accredited school and must have completed at minimum of at least 30 semester hours of coursework prior to the start of the internship.
  • Maintaining a GPA of 2.75 or higher is required in order to qualify for this position.
  • When applying to this position, please keep in mind that you must be a current student who is scheduled to graduate after May 2024.
  • Bilingual a plus (Spanish/English).

Necessary:

  • Must be able to start the internship on May 20, 2024.
  • You must provide your own reliable transportation to work.
  • You must provide your own living arrangements in the local area.

The hourly rate for these roles is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, academic classification, and degree seeking area of study.
