The Director of Educational Technology oversees instructional design improvement and innovation in various educational environments, emphasizing the effective use of pedagogy and technology. This position contributes to the University’s goal of achieving student success through collaborative curricular initiatives, faculty/staff training, and reliable departmental services. As a leader in the Technology Services Department, the Director champions the use of technology in academic events/activities to promote teaching, learning, and scholarship. They foster partnerships among faculty, academic leaders, and technology professionals, leading the Educational Technology team’s support of TS resources for enhanced teaching and learning.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: 

  • Provides leadership in the development of strategic approaches for the integration of technology into the educational environments of the University.
  • Provides leadership and innovation for enhancing teaching and learning through the identification, evaluation, adoption, and integration of effective educational innovations into the curriculum.
  • Provides support for the faculty teaching and serves as liaison to students, faculty, student services, and University educational leadership.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with faculty throughout the University to provide pedagogical and technical consulting to design, develop, and implement instructional content, courses and projects that enrich teaching and learning through the use of technology in traditional, hybrid and online courses, including the integration of student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborates with University Deans and Directors, Technology Services, and others within the University to infuse technology into the educational pedagogy.
  • Provides administrative and technical support for all instructional technology to improve learning outcomes, facilitate technology-rich teaching, and advance curricular innovation.
  • Formulates and provides a professional development program designed to support faculty in the design, development and delivery of curriculum and instruction using computer-mediated communications, cognitive and interactive media tools, and sound research-based course design for both in-person and distance learning opportunities.
  • Develops and maintains an online repository of resources to provide information on current best practices, innovations, and emerging trends for faculty and students (e.g. tutorials, interactive programs, websites) to promote sharing of resources.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures related to the campus LMS
  • Maintains the campus LMS by serving as the platform administrator
  • Engages the academic community in the exploration, discussion, and assessment of educational technology and works collaboratively across the University to leverage and expand existing efforts into an intentional program of faculty support.
  • Maintains awareness of best practices, emerging technologies and new potentials in educational technology that may be adopted as new and emerging instructional media, technologies, pedagogies and practices.
  • Establishes baseline data; tracks/records attendance at faculty training workshops; maintains course log by faculty by departments; analyzes outcomes based on training, service, and support provided to faculty; and monitors progress to achieve goals.
  • Maintains appropriate records and data to produce monthly performance reports, annual performance reports, and external reports.
  • Coordinates with the Chief Information Officer to ensure adequate technology infrastructure exists to meet the goals of technology-enhanced curricula.
  • Participates in relevant University policy and planning committees and meetings.
  • Supports the values and institutional goals as defined in the University Strategic Plan.
  • Serves as the Education Technologist for the Social Sciences and Graduate Programs
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provides high-value leadership to members of the Educational Technology team. Guides the team through projects and ensures the greatest level of success of their efforts. Mentors members of the team in areas of personal and professional development to ensure their continued growth.
  • Uses interpersonal skills and makes sound judgments to decide how duties and responsibilities are completed between coworkers, the supervisory chain, faculty, staff, students, and customers.

Budget Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing the Educational Technology cost center
  • Ensures that the technical architecture is forward-looking, cost effective, secure, meets business and technical requirements, and is technically correct.

Qualifications: 

Education and Experience:

  • A graduate degree in education, technology, leadership, or administration is required. Graduate degrees in other fields will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • A doctoral degree in an education field is strongly recommended.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a leadership or management position, with a preference for candidates with experience in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in various modalities of teaching and learning, including online, hybrid/blended, and on-site/face to face formats.
  • Proficient in instructional design theories and practices.
  • Ability to effectively integrate technology into the teaching/learning process.
  • Skilled in designing, developing, delivering, and evaluating professional development activities related to instructional design.
  • Capability to incorporate interactive multimedia to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Ability to manage and supervise multiple, complex projects and operations within established timelines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community

Compensation and Benefits:
The anticipated range for this position is $90,000 – $97,835. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate’s education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

-Positions that work less than .75 FTE (1,560 hours per year) do not qualify for long-term disability or education benefits.
-Positions that work less than .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will accrue paid sick leave but are not eligible for additional benefits.
-Temporary positions that work at least .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will be eligible for benefits.
