The University of Virginia seeks a part-time (20 hours/week) Instructional Designer within the School of Data Science who serve as an energetic problem-solver to help all academic programs meet and expand their educational goals. The Instructional Designer will design, lead, and assess strategies to help all faculty and staff colleagues gain confidence in their use of the Learning Management System, video meetings, grading, communication platforms, code repositories, electronic books, and community-building systems.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on the M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) Online program to help instructors manage Canvas, Zoom, and establish calibrated and sustainable course design practices across the curriculum
  • Within the MSDS Online program, assist faculty with annual course refresh terms
  • Create strategies on the use of current and new educational technology and communicate those strategies both widely within the School and in individual consultation with faculty
  • Meet with vendors who offer technology that increases our ability to meet program goals to assess its efficacy
  • Keep current with research on educational outcomes in online spaces
  • Understand the role and contribution of online tooling for residential programs
  • Generate a strategy to make MSDS Online course materials open-source
  • Standardize use of Rivanna, Teams, GitHub and other existing resources that require prior setup across courses
  • Collaborate with UVA Information Technology Services, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and other colleagues within the School of Data Science and across the University on best practices for the delivery of education online

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Exemplary communication skills.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.

This is a part-time position at 20 hours/week with pro-rated benefits

Anticipated hiring range: $35,000-$40,000

This position is 100% remote.

Physical Demands: 

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
