The Design & Development Manager leads a cross-functional team in the creation and enhancement of Capella University’s course offerings and courseroom experiences. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the team delivers high-quality, engaging, and innovative educational content. The Manager collaborates closely with academic and business stakeholders, including Directors, Concept to Launch partners, and the Assistant Provost of Learning Strategy, & Innovation, to align course development with the strategic goals of the institution. This position requires a strong commitment to continuous improvement, fostering a culture of creativity, diversity, equity, and inclusivity within the team. As a key leader, the Manager is responsible for setting and maintaining high standards of quality and consistency in all course development activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Direct a diverse team of instructional architects, designers, editors, and learning technologists, ensuring alignment with the department’s vision and goals.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for school leadership, partnering with academic and business leaders to align course offerings with institutional goals.
  • Oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of program curricula, courses, and content, ensuring they meet high-quality standards and are contextually rich and engaging.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for innovation and process improvements, including the use of new technologies and automation to streamline workflows.
  • Coordinate professional development strategies for the team, fostering an environment that promotes learning and growth.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in e-learning and educational technology, integrating these insights into course development processes.

  • Demonstrated ability in instructional design principles and educational technology.
  • Strong project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Work Experience:

  • 5-7 years of experience in product development, higher education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management role.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in Business, Education, Instructional Technology, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • All degrees must be conferred from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.
  • Travel via plane, car, and metro is required to perform this job.
  • Must be able to work 40-45 hours per week or more when business needs warrant.
  • Access information using a computer.
  • Effectively communicate, both up and down the leadership chain.
  • Effectively cope with stressful situations.
  • Strong mental acuity.

Other:

  • Must be able to travel 25% of time.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
  • Typical office setting.
