The Director of Education, under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, is directly responsible for planning, coordinating and carrying out the education program in accordance with the hospital’s standards, policies and Philosophy for all hospital personnel.

Qualifications

Primary (Essential) Duties:

  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, complying at all times with the policies and procedures of the hospital. 
  • Meets regularly with the Chief Nursing Officer to discuss hospital Philosophy, objectives, staff and management education needs, budgetary review of programs and equipment, program plans, and related problems.
    • Serves as Education consultant to the Administrative Team.
    • Presents programs for Administrative approval.
    • Implements approved Education programs.
    • Reports on effectiveness of programs.
  • Meets with Nursing Education Committee in an ex-officio capacity, and:
    • Serves as consultant and resource person to Nursing Education Committee, Nursing DepartmentDirectors, and 10% all nursing staff in instructional methods and program development.
      • Develops orientation and in-service programs concerning Philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures of the Medical Center and nursing departments.
  • Assists all Department Directors in planning and implementing programs specific to their departments by helping them to:
    • Determine learning needs of employees and evaluate request for programs.
    • Set goals, plan objectives, programs and presentations.
    • Select materials and equipment for presentation.
    • Select appropriate speakers.
    • Plan meeting agendas.
    • Helps establish an individual in each department who promotes and helps coordinate staff development programs specific to their department.
  • Serves as resource and role model in area of curriculum planning, teaching and curriculum evaluation.
  • Develops, plans and organizes educational programs for all levels of personnel and evaluates programs at least annually.
    • Includes the following areas in programs:Supervisor/Management Education, Orientation, Skill Training, Mandatory Continuing Education.
    • Uses a variety of educational strategies to meet individual learning styles.
  • Manages the functions within the Education Department by:
    • Planning and organizing the resources and facilities needed to accomplish the objectives of staff education.
    • Developing and monitoring a budget that meets the objectives of hospital staff education.
    • Hiring, evaluating and directing the activities of the Education Department staff.
    • Researching, developing and maintaining library resources that are responsive to multiple disciplines and a variety of learning styles.
    • Collecting, routing, posting and distributing notices of professional and personal development opportunities from colleges, trade schools, seminars and meetings that are available to staff.
    • Keeping records of all programs including subject matter, types of programs, equipment and material used, speaker and evaluation of programs.
    • Developing system to ensure that accurate records documenting staff education are furnished to Personnel.
    • Maintaining a Quality Assurance program for the Department of Education.
  • Participates on selected hospital committees.
  • Establishes and maintains effective interdepartmental and community relationships to promote educational activities for the hospital.
  • Establishes and maintains effective liaison with schools and universities and enlists their cooperation in developing courses which meet professional and technical need.
  • Consults with outside agencies and organizations on available educational programs or the development of such, and coordinates with hospital programs.

Education & Experience:

  • The Director of Education, under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, is directly responsible for planning, coordinating and carrying out the Medical Center’s education program in accordance with the hospital standards, policies and Philosophy for all hospital personnel.­
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Master’s degree in a health related or education field preferred.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing or diploma in nursing, and Bachelor’s degree in adult education with 2-3 year’s acute care clinical experience with suffi­cient scope and experi­ence to understand the needs of the Division of Nursing, and two or more year’s of related education experience acceptable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required as well as ability to stimulate and motivate learning.
