Description Of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The department offers several undergraduate and graduate degrees in statistics and data science. It comprises 21 faculty, over 100 graduate students in our MS, MAS , and PhD graduate programs, and over 50 undergraduate students, and has a network of faculty affiliates at nearby research agencies (National Center for Atmospheric Research, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others). Faculty members have a wide range of expertise and are involved in various interdisciplinary graduate training and research activities. Internal and external consulting activities of the department are supported through the Graybill Statistics and Data Science Laboratory.

Position Summary

The Department of Statistics is seeking a dynamic and committed Academic Success Coordinator ( ASC ) who will play a significant role in promoting undergraduate student success. This is a part-time (20 hours/week), two-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal based on available funding and job performance.

This ASC will work directly with Statistics majors and minors.

The Academic Success Coordinator, in collaboration with the department’s advising and mentoring team, department faculty, and ASCs in the College of Natural Sciences and across campus, will provide academic guidance for students in ways that are both holistic and strategic and will contribute to the department’s ongoing initiatives to building a diverse and welcoming community of students, staff, and faculty. The primary functions of the ASC will be

  • To proactively advise statistics students from the time they arrive at new student orientation through graduation, and
  • To coordinate key undergraduate programs that will support recruitment and retention of a diverse and inclusive student body, providing students with an excellent undergraduate educational experience.

Required Job Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by start of the appointment.
  • Two years of professional experience working with students in a high school or higher education setting.

Preferred Job Qualifications

 

  • Experience with mentoring and advising.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Professional experience working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience organizing and participating in student engagement activities.
  • Commitment to actively increasing participation of underrepresented groups in statistics and data science.
  • Experience in a STEM field.
  • Demonstrated ability to do detailed work, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish and other languages

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Academic Advising of Undergraduate Students

Duty/Responsibility

 

  • Assist with holistic advising during new freshmen and transfer student orientation.
  • Participate in summer orientation advising for incoming students. This involves one-on-one advising with students, and collaborating with other advisors in the college on group based programming.
  • Through regular meetings and email communication, develop and maintain ongoing advising/mentoring relationships with students beginning at freshmen/transfer orientation and continuing through graduation.
  • Strategically and holistically advise statistics undergraduate students regarding majors/minors, curriculum matters, course offerings, degree plans, and progress towards degree completion. Assist with short term and long-term planning, including career planning.
  • Make referrals and connections to appropriate department and campus resources to promote student success
  • Provide major and career advice for CSU students seeking to change major to Statistics. Establish on-going relationship with students who are in the process of changing majors through the major change and graduation.
  • Participate in student recruitment efforts. Meet with and advise prospective students and their guests.
  • Analyze data and produce reports on student success (e.g., admissions, retention/graduation, diversity). Use analysis to drive strategic initiatives and develop appropriate programs.
  • Communicate with department staff on course scheduling and student requests for course overrides, substitutions, and transfer evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the department’s advising and mentoring team, department faculty, and ASC’s in the College of Natural Sciences and across campus.
