The first course in the Learning Analytics Series focuses on the foundations and concepts of analytics in higher education to help educators understand their value and how to use them as a tool and resource to deliver a better learning experience. 

It sightsees the different approaches of learning analytics and how to apply them in the digital teaching practice; it is platform agnostic, therefore anyone with an interest in understanding the key concepts can enroll regardless of the Learning Management System they’re using. 

The course covers an ample extent of the concept of analytics, its different approaches, definitions, use and how they fit into the broader landscape including higher education, business, and academic scenarios. The topics covered during the sessions facilitate a better understanding of real-time learner behaviors and interactions drawn by real-time data that can be provided by the LMS tools. Getting access to such information helps teachers measure important characteristics of the learning process and take action that is reflected in the teaching practice. Acknowledging this valuable insight makes room for constant improvement and reach excellence in the student learning experience. The purpose of the course is to cut the breach between educators and analytics so they can easily analyze and interpret data to derive “actionable” insights that be used for better decision making.  

This course is intended for instructors, teachers, institutional leaders, instructional designers, and anyone else with an interest in understanding the purpose and value of analytics in higher education. No major background is needed for enrollment, so people from other disciplines further than education are welcome. The course is platform agnostic and asynchronous and both courses on the series can be completed in any order; however, it is highly recommended to complete this course first for a deeper understanding as the second course of the series, is platform specific.
