The University of Texas at San Antonio Academic Innovation is seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about teaching and learning to partner with our faculty, graduate students, and staff as a professional Teaching and Learning Consultant. The job requires a unique combination of skills in faculty development, pedagogy, curriculum and instructional design, instructional technology, and course assessment for quality teaching and learning.

The Teaching and Learning Consultant will work closely with faculty, graduate students, colleagues in Academic Innovation, and other stakeholders to develop programming and professional development activities, materials, resources, and processes that support effective, engaging, and innovative teaching and learning practices for all course modalities.

Function: Provides expert consultation related to pedagogy, classroom management, learning theories, and course assessment to UTSA faculty and staff.  Provides leadership in developing, planning, and delivering university-wide programs designed to improve and enhance quality teaching and learning, specifically emphasizing learning and assessment in all modalities.

Scope: Works collaboratively with campus constituencies and contributes to the development of strategies and programs in support of the teaching mission of the university.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced-level consultation and leadership in planning and implementing university strategies and programs that are designed to contribute in measurable ways to improving the instruction of courses in all modalities at UTSA.
  • Designs, develops, delivers, manages, and evaluates professional development programs to improve faculty/staff curriculum, instruction, and technology knowledge and skills that promote best teaching practices.
  • Collaborates with university staff to ensure effective and timely delivery of programs.
  • Consults with faculty/staff to identify areas for pedagogical enhancement within the course curriculum. Conducts course reviews in order to identify instructional opportunities that contribute to improved learning.
  • Provides individual and group consultations related to pedagogy, course design, classroom management, learning theories, and course assessment to UTSA faculty teaching in all modalities.
  • Researches and evaluates new and emerging curriculum and instructional pedagogies and strategies for teaching and learning. Maintains current awareness of best practices, trends, theories, and new technologies related to pedagogy, classroom management, and teaching assessment.
  • Analyzes, prioritizes, and assesses the needs for faculty professional development in the areas of curriculum, instructional innovation, techniques, and technologies for delivering quality teaching and learning in all modalities.
  • Creates multimodal resources on quality teaching techniques and technologies.
  • Develops workshops/webinars, instructional materials, and outreach for faculty teaching in all different modalities.
  • Supports relevant initiatives of the university.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Periodic:

  • Develops and delivers presentations at professional meetings and conferences.
  • Writes articles and book chapters.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in an area of specialty from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in educational programs, learning assessment, and faculty development.
  • Project management experience, including the ability to identify goals, develop timelines, plans, milestones, and to track progress and provide updates.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills including the ability to communicate with non-technical and technically perceptive users.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, collaboration, and highly effective organizational skills.
  • Ability for strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new skills.
  • Willingness and ability to remain flexible in roles and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others in an academic community remotely and in person.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant studies in instructional design or related fields.
  • Doctoral degree or terminal degree in area of specialty from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in the use of cutting-edge integrated technology, including a wireless campus environment for teaching and learning.
  • Experience identifying, recommending, and implementing best practices for multiple teaching and learning spaces.
  • Experience researching and writing across wide areas and approaches to teaching, learning, and pedagogy.
  • Experience with a learning management system (such as Blackboard or Canvas).
  • Experience in curriculum design and faculty development experience in higher education.
  • Experience in a higher education environment and/or teaching and learning center.
  • Highly positive outlook and the ability to work with various groups and interests.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills; ability to multi-task, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that fosters teamwork and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with a high level of professionalism, flexibility, discretion, judgment, diplomacy, and tact.
  • Ability to promote and build consensus in the use of UTSA-supported partnerships with Online Learning Consortium, Quality Matters, ACUE, and supported digital tools for teaching and learning.

Working Conditions

Working Environment:

  • Office environment.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.

Physical Demands:

  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
