Chegg Learn | NY (preferred) or Santa Clara, CA I United States

Your goal:

Are you driven by opportunities to make a meaningful impact on students? Do you understand how to leverage data, design and learning science to build better support for the modern learner? Are you ready to join a team with audacious goals to transform educational technology? If you are jumping out of your seat to read ahead, then Chegg is the place for you.

The Culture:

Chegg’s culture celebrates leadership at all levels and does not discriminate based on job descriptions or titles. The culture is open, with our “fast feedback” system implemented to encourage transparency. You will be given latitude to drive and stretch to deliver mutual goals.

The Organization: Learning Experience Research and Design

The Learning Experience Research and Design team is central to Chegg – leading and implementing learning strategy across every service and surface in Chegg’s product ecosystem. Chegg’s Chief Academic Officer leads the team, which is comprised of several functions including learning experience design, learning analytics, and user experience research. Our mission at Chegg is to ensure learners achieve their learning goals in a supportive, engaging and efficacious way. We are driven by student outcomes, thrive in cross-functional teams, hold ourselves accountable to learning-specific KPIs, and demonstrate strong business acumen in Chegg’s fast-paced environment.

The Role: Senior Learning Experience Designer

As a Senior Learning Experience Designer focused on prompt engineering, you will shape Chegg learning experiences through collaboration with our Product Management, Design, Engineering, and Content teams.

  • You will have deep experience in designing innovative learning solutions that drive measurable learning.
  • You are skilled in crafting effective prompts and evaluating their outputs for accuracy, relevance, and helpfulness. You have an engineer’s knack for structured, analytical thought, and you are detail-oriented with high standards for quality.
  • You understand strategies for guiding LLM outputs—including prompt injection, chaining and others—to drive an efficacious, engaging and safe learning experience.
  • You have worked closely with product management teams to articulate, define and productize learning experience design solutions in the context of a complete product development lifecycle.
  • You understand instructional design and educational technology, you have deep teacher and learner empathy, and you know how to ensure our learning experiences are user-friendly and pedagogically effective.
  • You keep informed about developments in artificial intelligence and take an active interest in emerging research and industry trends, and you understand their implications for our product’s competitiveness and performance.

Supported by the Director of Learning Experience, the ideal candidate is a technically savvy self-directed problem solver and a learning advocate, owning LXD influence throughout the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including product managers, developers, and designers. Teach these teams relevant technical concepts and create useful documentation to achieve shared success in organization-wide goals and projects.
  • Construct, design, develop and manage execution of measurable, high quality, just-in-time, learning solutions which simplify knowledge access, ensure information integrity, and are optimized for user adoption and retention.
  • Establish mechanisms to measure the efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness of learning solutions on performance and on the learner experience.
  • Effectively communicate and share technical knowledge and AI-enabled learning strategies with colleagues to grow the team’s capabilities.

Requirements:

  • 4-6+ years of relevant or transferrable experience (for example: learning science background in edtech, product management, other development of AI-powered experiences through feedback, testing, and data).
  • A familiarity with the architecture and operation of large language models, and a clear and nuanced understanding of their capabilities and limitations.
  • Demonstrated skills developing prompts and prompt chains for conversational interactions with LLMs that guide learning.
  • Subject matter expertise in learning design principles, knowledge of post-secondary or adult educational theories and pedagogies.
  • Experience creating rapid prototypes to illustrate ideas.
  • Thrives in ambiguity, excelling at quickly grasping complex new information and applying it to achieve immediate results.
  • Successfully navigates an agile development environment, adapting to shifting priorities and deadlines with ease.
  • Experience working on/with product teams (product managers and user experience designers) and technical staff (software engineers and data scientists).
  • Experience developing formal, compelling business cases for presentation to stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated; independent, organized and proactive; highly responsive, flexible, and adaptable when working across multiple product teams in various time zones.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with adaptive learning systems and/or intelligent tutoring systems, and the pedagogical foundations behind the effective learning systems.
  • Proficiency in logic, control flows, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Cross-cultural competency skills demonstrating self-awareness, awareness of others, and the ability to adopt inclusive perspectives to drive the development of a product that serves people across the globe working with colleagues across the globe.

Even if you don’t meet each requirement, we encourage you to apply. Your skills and experience can be used as assets in many different ways that are relevant beyond the this list of qualifications.

The pay range for this position is $96,243 to $238,316. The actual pay will vary based on geographic location, job requirements, professional experience, and other factors.
