The University of Virginia’s Office of the Vice Provost for Online Education and Digital Innovation (OEDI) is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Senior Learning Designer to help shape the future of online and hybrid education at UVA. This pivotal role will be instrumental in driving innovation, maintaining the highest standards of quality, and ensuring that UVA’s digital learning offerings continue to deliver exceptional experiences for learners. 

Reporting to the Senior Director of Learning Experience and Digital Innovation, the Senior Learning Designer will lead the quality assurance process for all learning products developed within OEDI. This includes ensuring alignment with UVA’s rigorous academic standards and institutional vision. The Senior Learning Designer will also ensure that all learning products meet accessibility and compliance standards, including ADA requirements, to provide equitable and inclusive experiences for all learners. Additionally, the Senior Learning Designer will play a critical role in managing relationships with learning design vendors, overseeing project timelines, and ensuring all deliverables meet the university’s quality benchmarks. 

In collaboration with the Senior Director, the Senior Learning Designer will contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of a comprehensive learning design playbook. This resource will empower UVA’s schools and colleges to expand and enhance their online and hybrid program offerings effectively. The Senior Learning Designer will also help evaluate and pilot cutting-edge learning tools and technologies, including the integration of emerging AI solutions, to drive innovation and improve the teaching and learning experience.

Responsibilities 

  • Oversee the quality assurance process for all learning products developed within OEDI, ensuring alignment with UVA’s academic standards and institutional vision. 
  • Assist in the management of learning design vendors, including monitoring project timelines, deliverables, and adherence to quality benchmarks. 
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director to develop and maintain a comprehensive learning design playbook to support schools and colleges in expanding their online and hybrid offerings. 
  • Evaluate and pilot innovative learning design tools, technologies, and AI solutions to enhance teaching and learning experiences. 
  • Provide expertise and guidance to ensure all learning products meet accessibility and compliance standards, including ADA requirements. 
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff, offering guidance on best practices for online and hybrid course design. 
  • Monitor trends in online education and digital innovation to ensure UVA remains a leader in high-quality, learner-centered online education. 
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to align learning design initiatives with the university’s strategic goals. 
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of OEDI processes, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in delivering high-quality learning experiences. 
  • Support the university’s mission to grow its online education portfolio by driving innovation and ensuring exceptional learner outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree Required.  Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirement.
  • Experience: 5 years of directly relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Master’s degree required in a relevant field, such as instructional design, educational technology, curriculum development, learning sciences, higher education administration, or a related discipline. 
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in learning design, online education, instructional design, or a similar role in higher education or corporate training. 
  • Demonstrated experience with quality assurance processes in learning design, including developing and applying rubrics for online and hybrid courses. 
  • Experience ensuring accessibility and compliance standards, including ADA and WCAG requirements, are met in digital learning products.
  • Proven track record of managing design projects, including overseeing timelines, deliverables, and quality benchmarks. 
  • Strong project management skills with a history of successfully coordinating multiple stakeholders and complex projects. 
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative learning tools and technologies, including emerging AI applications, to enhance teaching and learning experiences. 
  • Familiarity with best practices in online and hybrid education, as well as knowledge of current trends and tools in the field. 

Work Location & Hours 

This position is hybrid, with regular travel to UVA Grounds as needed. Additional travel may be required to meet with partners and stakeholders, attend conferences, and participate in off-site activities. This is a full-time, exempt level, benefited position with UVA benefits. Employees benefits package highlights include:

The anticipated hiring range is $70,000-80,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
