Job Description:

Arizona State University, a global leader in innovative education, seeks a Senior Instructional Designer to join the passionate Learning Experience (LX) Design team within Enterprise Technology. This role provides crucial leadership to support and enhance the LX Design team, driving course development initiatives and integrating cutting-edge technologies—including AI—to advance teaching and learning.

As a Senior Instructional Designer, you will collaborate with university stakeholders to develop engaging, forward-thinking instructional solutions that align with ASU’s mission of inclusive and impactful education. You will lead a team of instructional designers, ensuring project goals are met effectively and efficiently while fostering a collaborative development environment. From developing engaging instructional solutions to fostering collaboration across teams, your work will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate with university stakeholders to design and implement innovative instructional strategies and processes.
  • Lead a team comprising instructional designers and a multimedia specialist, streamlining workflows, achieving project goals, and fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration.

Salary: $66,200 – 75,000.00 per year DOE

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Leadership and Oversight

  • Collaborate with Leadership: Partner with the Manager of Collaborative Learning Design and Production to align instructional design initiatives with university goals, ensuring consistent design standards and strategic alignment.
  • Supervise and Mentor Staff: Guide team performance, provide coaching, and recommend professional development opportunities to foster growth and excellence. Cultivate a collaborative culture that encourages innovation and knowledge-sharing.
  • Oversee Project Execution and Quality: Set KPIs, allocate resources, track and report milestones to ensure timely, high-quality project completion. Conduct quality reviews to confirm alignment with standards and provide leadership with progress updates and improvement recommendations.​

 

Instructional Design and Development

  • Lead Curriculum Design: Oversee the conception, implementation, and structure of course designs, including courses, modules, and special projects, to maximize learner engagement and retention.
  • Incorporate Evidence-Based Practices: Apply evidence-based instructional strategies to optimize the effectiveness and accessibility of learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with Faculty and Stakeholders: Partner with faculty, subject matter experts (SMEs), and instructional designers to define learning objectives, curate content, and maintain quality standards across all deliverables.​

Technology and Innovation

  • Leverage Technology Tools: Recommend and implement innovative technologies, including generative AI, to elevate instructional content and learning experiences.
  • Support Technology Adoption: Guide the effective use of learning platforms and digital tools to develop engaging and impactful learning experiences.

Training and Resources

  • Design and Deliver Professional Development: Develop and facilitate workshops, webinars, and training programs for faculty and instructional designers, incorporating best practices and adult learning theory to maximize engagement.
  • Maintain Resource Repositories: Create and update templates, tutorials, and design standards to streamline instructional development and ensure alignment with university best practices and policies.

Professional Growth and Representation

  • Promote Innovation: Stay informed on emerging trends in instructional design, learning theories, and technology tools to drive continuous improvement within the team.
  • Foster Team Development: Facilitate professional growth in areas like AI, multimedia design, and other emerging fields, encouraging team members to explore new opportunities.
  • Represent the Team: Present at conferences, workshops, and events to showcase the team’s expertise and contribute to broader instructional design conversations.
  • Take responsibility for fostering a positive culture, upholding organizational values, and championing engagement in all its forms.
  • Collaborate across teams and actively participate in ET/ASU events and programs.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Educational Technology, Technology, or a related area.
  • Five (5) years of providing learning/instructional design and/or technology development services. Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • A master’s or doctoral degree in education, curriculum and instruction, instructional design or technology, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and pedagogical approaches for diverse audiences and environments.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with industry-leading technologies and tools for content development, presentations, and web-based tutorials.
  • Experience with Canvas learning management system and troubleshooting related issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective time-management and organizational skills in environments with multiple priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Experience providing coaching and critical feedback.
  • Leadership experience in mentoring junior staff and modeling effective practices.
  • Successful completion of ASU’s Emerging Leaders or Supervisory Professional Development Program (or an equivalent leadership/management development program).
  • Ability to model empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence

Working Environment:

  • Tempe Campus 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Hybrid or flexible schedule as determined with supervisor and within ASU/Enterprise Technology guidelines.
  • Activities primarily take place in a standard, climate-controlled office environment and may involve extended periods of sitting, standing, or moving between office spaces.
  • This role involves regular use of a computer (desktop and/or laptop), including a keyboard and mouse.
  • Responsibilities may require the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities.
  • Effective communication and proficiency with a variety of technologies are essential for collaboration with the broader team.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
