The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Instructional Designer to join the Learning Design and Teaching Innovation (LDTI) team. In this role, you will work in an environment where diverse and innovative perspectives are strongly encouraged and valued. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting faculty in designing, developing, and supporting effective face-to-face, online, and hybrid course formats. As a Senior Instructional Designer, you will collaborate closely with members from the LDTI team and faculty to create impactful learning experiences for our students as well as play a vital role in the design, development and support of innovative and engaging course design.

Duties include:

  • Collaborate with the LDTI team and faculty to design, develop, and enhance face-to-face, online, hybrid, and non-credit courses that align with pedagogical
  • best practices, learning objectives, and quality standards.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to faculty in the design and implementation of instructional strategies and technologies, assessments, and multimedia
  • content to enhance student engagement, achievement and learning outcomes.
  • Provide guidance and support to faculty in the development of instructional materials, assessments, and interactive activities through facilitating virtual office hours and monitoring our support email.
  • Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting assistance to faculty regarding the UVA’s LMS Canvas and other instructional technologies (i.e. Hypothesis, H5P,
  • Flip, VoiceThread, Zoom, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the LDTI team to develop and implement instructional design templates, guidelines, and pedagogical best practices.
  • Evaluate and assess the effectiveness of instructional materials, activities, and assessments to continuously improve course quality.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends, pedagogical approaches, and accessibility requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree
Experience: Three years of instructional computing experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualification

  • In-depth knowledge and experience with instructional design models and adult learning theories.
  • Strong expertise in designing and developing dynamic courses, including the integration of multimedia, interactive elements, and assessments.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, subject matter experts, and instructional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in their instructional design approaches such as incorporating open educational
  • resources, universal design practices, or quality standards.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in instructional design, educational technology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience providing pedagogical consultation and support to faculty in a higher education environment.
  • Proficiency in using instructional technologies and tools, including Learning Management Systems (preferably Canvas), and multimedia authoring tools (e.g.
  • Camtasia, Captivate, Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise 360, etc.).
  • Proficiency in video editing and graphic design software (e.g. Premiere Pro, iMovie, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, etc.).
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices in course design.

This position has the option to be primarily remote, but the candidate needs to report to Charlottesville, VA a minimum of once per month.

Anticipated salary: $70,000-$85,000 including UVA benefits.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
