At AoPS, we believe that students learn best by working through challenging problems that present opportunities to develop problem-solving and critical reasoning skills through productive struggle and creative thinking. Our goal is for students to build a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics by grappling with why mathematics works. 

We seek math curriculum developers to shape innovative and engaging mathematical learning opportunities for motivated K-12 students.

The Math Curriculum Developer will be:

  • Expanding our Beast Academy math curriculum for elementary school students to provide a full-classroom experience to be delivered in schools across the country. 
  • Creating courses, lessons, activities, games, and puzzles for delivery in our twelve in-person AoPS Academy learning centers across the US.
  • Continuing the evolution of our Beast Academy Online learning system through designing and refining online lessons and activities (see a demo here).
  • Helping advance the state of the art in online course delivery by designing courses and delivery tools in our AoPS Online School or our AoPS Academy Virtual Campus.
  • Teaching your newly-developed or heavily-revised math classes at one of our AoPS Academy locations (including Virtual Campus) to remain connected to our students and our classrooms.
  • Developing or refining specialty courses for very advanced math students, such as training programs for math competitions.

  • You’ve built a passion for math through teaching or doing mathematics, and are eager to guide motivated students on mathematical explorations.
  • You have strong mathematical foundations and enjoy solving puzzles like this. You know a few creative ways to compute 1+3+5+7+…+199.
  • You’re excited about helping students grapple with and enrich their understanding of mathematical ideas through creating cognitively demanding math tasks.
  • Your classroom experience as a teacher or student has given you strong intuition and conviction about how we might best inspire and train the great problem-solvers of the next generation.
  • You look forward to the challenge of writing and designing for teachers, designing curricular materials that will empower them to provide engaging and rigorous classroom experience.
  • In addition to being a math geek, you’re a bit of a word geek, reading voraciously and fussing over your own writing.

Perks and Benefits: 

This is a hybrid full-time position based at our headquarters in San Diego, CA. Depending on experience level, we generally either hire at the Math Curriculum Developer I or Math Curriculum Developer II level. The full salary range for Math Curriculum Developer I is $60 – $70k and the full salary range for Math Curriculum Developer II is $70 – $85k, both with a 4% year-end bonus. Based on experience, interview performance, and initial projects/responsibilities, we’re also occasionally able to hire directly into a Senior Math Curriculum Developer position. This position has a full salary range of $85 – $110k with a 6% year-end bonus.

We also currently have a Math Curriculum Developer Team Lead position open which includes both developing curriculum and managing a team of curriculum developers. The Team Lead position has a full salary range of $90 – $115k with a 6% year-end bonus.

Initial Curriculum Task

For nearly all of the problems in our classes, books, and online learning systems, we provide students with full solutions — not just answers — after they have completed the problems. Our goal in providing solutions is for all students to learn useful strategies that they can apply to similar problems in the future, regardless of whether or not they answered the problem correctly. Write a full solution to the following problem appropriate for a 5th-6th grade student. You should assume that students won’t be using calculators.
