Job Summary

The Instructional Technologist II supports the integration and use of technology to enhance teaching and learning experiences. This position implements digital tools, helps faculty to create engaging learning environments across multiple delivery modes, and provides training on educational technologies. This position may design online resources and create multimedia objects to ensure the effective use of the Institute’s learning management system (LMS). The Instructional Technologist advances innovative teaching practices through the intentional integration of technology in the curriculum, ensuring that faculty are equipped with the right tools and supports for the delivery of high-quality, technology-enhanced educational content.

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Systems Administrator and other staff to implement new features, LMS integrations, and resolve complex technical issues. Manages and maintains the existing educational technology platforms life cycle, with a main focus on the learning management system.
  • Develops and facilitates small group faculty training sessions for existing and new educational technology platforms. Provides one-on-one training consultations and just-in-time educational technology support by faculty request.
  • Creates and maintains self-service technology training resources within the help center platform. Regularly review documentation for updates, identifies skill gaps, and develops additional training resources (written, video) for the faculty audience.
  • Collaborates with the CTL Leadership team to guides strategic decision-making, planning, and mentorship related to institutional academic technologies with a main focus on the learning management system, including: 
    • Research new methods for delivering course material
    • Recommend new educational technologies for the RIT toolbox
    • Collect and review usage data to make informed decisions
  • Research emerging academic technologies as they pertain to teaching and learning in higher education. Obtain training/certifications in emerging technology applications as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Information Technology, Multimedia, Education, or a related field
  • Three or more years’ experience administering a learning management system 
  • Five or more years’ experience providing direct service and/or consulting to others.
  • Five or more years’ experience in technical training and/or leading professional development
  • Technologically savvy individual with intermediate-to-advanced knowledge of learning management systems, web conferencing, and video hosting platforms.
  • Knowledge of instructional theories and their applications as well as emerging educational technologies.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple projects to completion in a timely manner.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to exercise mature judgment and the ability to work independently.
  • A customer-service mindset and an enthusiasm for educational technology. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and guide their use of technology in a variety of learning capacities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working with Brightspace (D2L) learning management system
  • Knowledge of requirements related to instructional technology for ADA compliance
  • Experience working with Generative AI tools

Department/College Description

This position is on the Learning Design and Technology team in the Center for Teaching and Learning in Academic Affairs. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) promotes excellence in teaching and the creation of exceptional learning experiences by championing an effective and innovative teaching culture across the university.

CTL provides faculty with trainings and professional development, one-on-one consultations, and just-in-time technical support along with the resources necessary to build and share content for a variety of technologies for all course modalities.
