Job Summary

The Instructional Designer provides instructional and program design expertise for the development and support of academic courses and specialized educational programs delivered via the Learning Management System (LMS) – Canvas. Responsible for assisting instructors and program directors in the design of curriculum and instruction, development of learning resources, and revision of traditional courses to online modality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the planning, implementation and tracking of courses and projects from inception to completion. 
  • Collaborate with instructors/subject matter experts from a wide range of disciplines throughout the entire course design process. 
  • Apply and ensure that all courses are student-centered, enable the intended learning outcomes, as well as meet university standards, accessibility requirements and universal design guidelines.
  • Conduct course quality reviews using national quality standards such as Quality Matters; provide recommendations for course improvements; promote good practices of teaching and learning with technology.
  • Create and allocate supporting material and media (audio, video, simulations, role plays, gamification, etc.) to be used within the LMS. 
  • Use document authoring, multimedia authoring, and Web design software (such as HTML, Java, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, etc.) to create instructional materials.
  • Utilize AI tools, animation software, and other video editing tools to aid subject matter experts to create content for training courses.
  • Develop trainings/workshops and resources for instructors to improve instructional practices and course design; add to a knowledge repository for instructors to assist with online teaching and learning tools.
  • Provide guidance and advice to departments and management on technical systems or processes related to instructional design tools and topics.
  • Evaluate new educational applications and software programs that would enhance course development and/or delivery.
  • Research new ways to assist instructors in the development of online teaching strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design (or Technology), Education, Curriculum Design, or related field. 
  • Two (2) years experience in course design or curriculum design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in course design or curriculum design in higher education.
  • Training and experience with different LMS such as Canvas and Blackboard, advance document authoring, multimedia authoring, and web design software (such as HTML, Java, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, etc.).
  • Certified in quality standards such as Quality Matters.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning processes in educational settings.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant multi-user computer systems, applications, and/or equipment.
  • Knowledge of federal copyright laws as they pertain to the use of computer software.
  • Ability to provide course design related to building online courses efficiently with numerous instructors in a professional educational environment.
  • Ability to plan, implement, test and troubleshoot education technology applications.
  • Ability to author technical documentation in paper, online, and video formats for the use of educational technology.
  • Utilize AI tools, animation software, and other video editing tools to aid subject matter experts to create content for training courses.
