Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX), the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley, has been building bridges between UC Berkeley and the public since 1891. UNEX serves the professional and continuing education goals of thousands of people each year and plays an essential part of the University mission to extend the research and scholarship of UC Berkeley to a global community, increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online and international students, and improve the workforce.

UC Berkeley Extension is a part of the division under the leadership of the Dean of Extended Education that also includes Berkeley Summer Sessions, Berkeley Study Abroad, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Position Summary

This position will apply instructional design and technology principles to create and support engaging, interactive online courses.

This position will create online course materials and courses within an LMS (Canvas) that meet specific goals for the mission of the department (EDT-SSALLEX). This position will also assist in the creation of media content, such as podcasts, videos. They will also work collaboratively in a team to design course templates, improve and evaluate courses, and design/redesign content to ensure it matches the client’s needs. This position will also research and implement new technologies, collaborate with clients and technology staff to resolve issues related to technology use, and train others on how to use new tools and technologies. Experience with Cidilabs and LTIs are a plus!

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Director of EDT, Academic Design Manager, instructors, subject matter experts, and academic staff to determine methods for delivery of educational technology tools, course design, and course content.
  • Advocates technology tools and creative processes that advance student engagement and academic learning.
  • Performs highly complex assessments of internal requirements and client requirements for instructional technology tools and advises on the appropriate technology.
  • Assesses current or emerging technology and advises on its appropriate use for teaching, course development, and delivery.
  • Acts as key resource for the most complex and critical educational technology integrations with high touch clients.
  • Applies advanced professional knowledge in instructional design and technology to create and design complex online courses, maps learning objectives/outcomes to create performance data.
  • Applies programming knowledge and user experience principles to enable the delivery of user behavior data related to interactive learning activities.
  • Collaborates with the Educational Design and Technology (EDT) Academic Design Manager (ADM) to test content and learning tools to determine if they meet usability and ADA requirements for the division. Works with EDT ADM to research and document copyright for embedded media and other non-faculty-created content.
  • Identifies and assists the EDT ADM with requirements and specific technical needs for most complex and significant online course and instructional technology needs.
  • Collaborates with other EDT team members in overseeing standards and development of online support, user documentation and/or user requirements.
  • Creates multimedia content, including interactive learning activities, video or audio components. Establishes detailed schedules for individual or multiple courses within a program, and oversees production.
  • Works in a collaborative manner with EDT instructional designers, technology staff, faculty, and teaching assistants and demonstrates diplomacy and tact in all communications.
  • Solves complex content or delivery related issues through the application of technology tools and approaches, and produces production processes for training and use across EDT teams and academic departments.
  • Works in a collaborative manner with others in a diverse environment and at all levels in the organization to prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis, and develop recommendations.
  • Leads the process to conduct appropriate job and task analyses in the context of technical or specialized training in Instructional Technologies.
  • Actively seeks out knowledge of new and emerging educational technologies.
  • Researches potential solutions new technologies could provide.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced ability to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, collaboration and negotiation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of and/or can quickly learn organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
  • Advanced knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
  • Advanced understanding of business strategies and market priorities related to online learning and achievement of organizational goals.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems and content creation tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of applying adult learning theories and education methodologies in creative ways.
  • Advanced knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.).
  • Expert level skills in application of planning, resourcing and monitoring of effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the organization.
  • Thorough knowledge to conduct appropriate job and task analyses in the context of instructional design of technical or specialized training.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Master’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 1-year, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This is an exempt position, which is paid monthly at an annual rate.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $110,000.00.
