Job Summary/Basic Function

About This Role:

The Instructional Designer will be responsible for developing high-quality online course designs in alignment with university standards. The candidate must possess expertise in instructional design methodologies, Learning Management Systems, and quality standards for course design. This role involves close collaboration with faculty to ensure the quality and effectiveness of course content while also providing training in learning technology. Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, and the capacity to work independently are essential.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities

  • Work with faculty and subject matter experts to design and develop effective and engaging online courses.
  • Utilize the Blackboard Learning Management System for course development and provide expertise to faculty.
  • Provide faculty support for learning technology tools, course layout, and course content delivery.
  • Apply proven instructional design theories and practices to create optimal learning experiences.
  • Conduct training sessions to assist faculty in adopting learning technologies and best practices in online teaching.
  • Oversee multiple instructional design projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines set by the director.
  • Collaborate with the Instructional Design Manager and the department director to achieve project objectives
  • Periodically update and revise course content to ensure its relevance and effectiveness.
  • Under limited supervision, research, write, and/or edit material consulting with faculty as necessary.
  • Ensure all courses meet Quality Matters standards and university guidelines through regular review and updating.

  • Familiarity with quality assurance frameworks like Quality Matters.
  • Skill in ensuring course designs meet university and industry standards.
  • Expertise in using the Learning Management Systems for course development.
  • Basic understanding of other educational technology tools and software.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, ensuring timely completion.
  • Proficient in project management software, such as Smartsheet or equivalent.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with faculty subject matter experts.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Skill in conducting training sessions for faculty on best practices in online teaching and technology use.
  • Ability to provide ongoing support and resources to faculty.
  • Competency in updating and maintaining course content for relevance and effectiveness.
  • Ability to implement periodic quality reviews.
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative to solve problems.
  • Self-discipline and effective time management skills.
  • Flexibility in adapting to new technologies, methodologies, and project requirements.
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally in the field of instructional design.

Physical Requirements

  • Short term and long-term memory ability is required in all tasks
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Work under pressure of deadlines and time constraints
  • May be required to work at a computer workstation for extended periods of time
  • Ability to see and read printed materials
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone or in web meetings
  • Manual dexterity to carry out the functions of the above essential responsibilities.
  • Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.
  • Ability to comprehend visual and auditory input given by others

Job Conditions

  • This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
  • Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Some travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Instructional Design, Education Technology
  • Or Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of experience in Instructional Design
  • Proficiency in Learning Management Systems
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Knowledge of adult learning theories
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty
