Job Summary

The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME), is seeking an Instructional Design Specialist. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The School of MIME offers on-campus and Ecampus courses and degrees and has a growing need for a position to support quality control in course delivery and learning outcomes across modalities. The Instructional Design Specialist provides instructional design support for course and academic resource development, including creating and implementing design strategies, reviewing content for compliance with standards, and supporting the evaluation of the efficacy of course design on achieving learning outcomes. Responsibilities include building course materials in Canvas for both on-campus and Ecampus courses, coordinating with faculty and Ecampus course developers, and guiding faculty through course development and redevelopment. They also serve as the primary resource for Canvas-related issues, offering troubleshooting support to faculty and students. Additionally, the role entails conducting quality assurance checks and maintaining Canvas web pages. The Instructional Design Specialist will also assist with administrative tasks assigned by the School Head. This includes identifying, organizing, and compiling essential materials for ABET accreditation and coordinating curriculum proposals.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Design (80%)

  • Collaborate closely with faculty during the design and development process making joint decisions about the implementation of design strategies.
  • Implement changes to design strategies for course and academic resource design in response to current trends; provide guidance among faculty and students on the effective use of teaching techniques and technology.
  • Develop and integrate course and resource content into the online platform (Canvas), including any additional tools and technology being used, to include but not limited to page design and formatting, embedding media, building exams, and structuring rubrics.
  • Provide ongoing instructional design and development of hybrid and online course materials that will enhance the effectiveness of Ecampus MIME courses.
  • Conduct comprehensive quality assurance reviews on all content and the learning environment to ensure that technical specifications match course and resource requirements set by the faculty met; Ensure that courses and resources published are error-free.
  • Maintain project documentation and archive project records including meeting notes, status updates, project tracking data, and final project reviews following established practices in the unit.
  • Provide high-level troubleshooting support for online platform-related issues.

Administrative Instructional Support (15%)

  • Identify, understand, and organize required materials and information for the ABET accreditation process. Communicate with faculty to gather materials and ensure completeness.
  • Compile data on course enrollment, academic achievement, and Student Learning Experience (SLE) to generate statistical reports and analysis to support decisions on course design.
  • Gather syllabi and review for accuracy, compliance, and completeness.
  • Enter program and course proposals into the OSU Curriculum Information Management System and track progress and alert individuals for needed input.

Other duties as assigned (5%)

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive learning/working environment for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Keeps current with research pertaining to online higher education, pedagogy, andragogy, and pertinent learning theories.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in adult education, instructional technology, curriculum design, or related field
  • General understanding of pedagogy and learning theories.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex, time-sensitive projects to successful completion.
  • Experience authoring in a learning management system, for example, Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience interacting with diverse groups of people, especially in a professional context.
  • Awareness of Universal Design for Learning principles and accessibility requirements for online content.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to solve problems with flexibility and creativity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a customer-service oriented position.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, electronic, and written presentation skills.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Postgraduate degree in adult education, instructional technology, curriculum design, or related field.
  • three years of online or hybrid course development or teaching experience at the college or university level.
  • Strong understanding of pedagogy and learning theories specifically as applied to hybrid and online higher education.
  • Significant experience in hybrid or online course development or in instructional design or in faculty support.
  • Experience working in higher education, especially in developing or teaching hybrid or online courses, and/or with instructional development and support.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position is located on-site in Corvallis, OR with 8:00 AM – 5:00PM work hours. Occasional weekend or evening work may be required
