Position Overview:

Arizona State University (ASU) seeks a visionary and strategic leader to serve as the Executive Director of Learning Experience. Known for its innovation and commitment to educational access and success, ASU offers a unique opportunity in this role to lead transformative learning experiences at one of the world’s most dynamic public universities. This position plays a critical role in guiding ASU’s learning technology ecosystem to support students and faculty in diverse environments through close partnerships with academic leaders and other stakeholders across the university. As a leader within ASU Enterprise Technology, the Executive Director will build partnerships across ASU and beyond to align initiatives with ASU’s charter and strategic goals. This role requires a leader capable of simultaneously driving ASU’s portfolio of learning experience initiatives and advancing its charter of inclusion and impact in higher education. The ideal candidate is a highly collaborative and effective communicator, skilled in creating impactful learning environments using emerging technologies. Collaborating in-person at ASU campuses in Arizona will be essential for success in this role.

Job Description:

Salary Range:

$150,000 – $190,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties:

  • Work collaboratively with university leaders to define and drive a comprehensive strategy for learning experience and AI integration, shaping the direction of ASU’s technology-enhanced learning landscape.
  • Align learning technology initiatives with institutional priorities by building strong relationships across ASU’s matrixed environment, including faculty, administrators, research leaders, and external partners.
  • Collaborate with ASU colleges, schools,  and the Office of the Provost to align faculty technology training with ASU’s pedagogical objectives, supporting a range of modalities including online, hybrid, and adaptive learning environments.
  • Champion piloting of new capabilities, including AI technologies, that have the potential to transform the learning experience.
  • Lead the rollout of large-scale, university-wide technology implementations, ensuring seamless integration into ASU’s technology infrastructure and alignment with ASU’s charter and strategic goals.
  • Contribute to ASU’s community of instructional designers, technologists, and digital learning leaders to track and respond to emerging trends in educational technology, and adapt ASU’s technology strategy to address the evolving needs of faculty, students, and the global higher education landscape.
  • Establish a collaborative framework across ASU to drive cross-functional adoption of AI and learning technologies, creating a unified, forward-looking approach to digital transformation.
  • Lead and mentor an organization of 100+ professionals that focus on learning experience design, digital learning environments, classroom design and support, and Dreamscape Learn operations. Create and administer metrics to assess the impact of learning technology initiatives, providing evidence-based insights and recommendations to ASU leadership.
  • Oversee the learning experience annual operating budget, ensuring resource allocation aligns with strategic priorities and university-wide needs. Develop multi-year financial plans that support the evolution of ASU’s learning technology infrastructure, enhancing outcomes and operational efficiency. Facilitate procurement and/or partnership agreements. 
  • Cultivate external partnerships with industry, government, and academic organizations to extend ASU’s capabilities in AI and learning technology, fostering collaboration and innovation.
  • Work with university partners to develop and oversee the execution of strategic goals and priorities that align with ASU charter.
  • Collaborate internally with Enterprise Technology partners to inform product and service development activities to advance university-wide technology strategy, providing updates and insights on emerging trends to university leaders.
  • Serve as a thought leader for AI and emerging technology, contributing to emerging models and best practices in higher education.
  • Develop research and development opportunities through grants and philanthropic investments. 
  • Foster a culture of inclusion, respect and professional development.

Desired Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Masters degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment (Ph.D. preferred)

Knowledge and Work Experience

  • Extensive experience in educational technology and strategy within large or complex organizations, with a demonstrated ability to lead organization-wide technology transformation.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, policy development, and cross-functional leadership, with a track record of delivering successful, large-scale digital initiatives.
  • Knowledge of current AI applications, educational technology trends, and best practices in higher education.

  • Analytical and Data-Driven: Proficiency in using data to drive decision-making, evaluate program effectiveness, and guide ASU’s technology strategy.
  • Team Development and Mentorship: Experienced in building high-performing teams, fostering a culture of professional growth, and promoting a positive, inclusive work environment. 

Working Environment:

  • Activities primarily take place in a standard, climate-controlled office environment and may involve extended periods of sitting, standing, or moving between office spaces.
  • This role involves regular use of a computer (desktop and/or laptop), including a keyboard and mouse.
  • Responsibilities require the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities, which may include the resolution of conflicts.
  • Effective communication and proficiency with a variety of technologies are essential for collaboration with the broader team.
  • May require occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and nine (9) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field including five (5) years managerial experience; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
