eLearning Specialist 

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 77,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced eLearning Specialist for our office in Tysons (McLean), Virginia.  Using instructional design skills, the eLearning Specialist will develop learning modules for members and staff, in collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs).  They will develop outlines, write video scripts, envision graphics, develop prototypes, and then work with the ALPA Communications Department to produce final modules.  The eLearning modules will cover a variety of subject areas including, but not limited to, finance, legal, and other policy issues; business system training; and, information about ALPA events.  Fully developed eLearning modules will usually reside on ALPA’s Learning Management System (LMS).

Required skills for this position include:

  • Working knowledge of modern adult learning and visual design principles and best practices.
  • Ability to complete instructional analysis, including needs, learner, task, and context analysis.
  • Skilled in designing learning objectives, design documentation, storyboards, instructional scripts, and training guides, while guiding subject matter experts.
  • Ability to develop effective and innovative solutions such as interactive digital learning experiences and infographics.
  • Implementation of member-focused educational campaigns and training while collaborating with SMEs, stakeholders, and a cross-functional team consisting of internal staff, LMS administrators, and strategy & solutions specialists.
  • Experience in measuring and evaluating training effectiveness through learner experience and learning analytics.
  • Conveying intermediate to complex subject matter using a variety of learning formats and visual communication types.

Travel:  5 – 10%.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area, e.g., Instructional Design, Adult Education, Visual Communications, or related field, from an accredited college or university required; master’s degree or completion of post-graduate courses in Instructional Design, Adult Learning, or Learning Technology a plus; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated expertise in Instructional Design and/or Visual Communications.
  • Three plus (3+) years of experience incorporating adult learning principles, visual communications, and effective learning techniques and interactions into design.
  • Three plus (3+) years of experience with eLearning authoring tools such as Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, and performance mapping software.
  • Strong project and time management and problem-solving skills required.
  • Experience designing learning experiences for external customers strongly preferred.
  • Solid communication skills, oral and written, for interaction with member pilots and staff, required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and tact to work with all levels of employees, management, and membership.
  • Previous performance as a self-starter with the ability to work independently, without close supervision, and provide solutions to various issues as they arise.
  • Strong attention to detail with organizational and follow-through skills.
  • Able to work flexible schedule on short notice as needed.

Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and the local metropolitan area.  May also include occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, e.g., to pack and/or move case(s).

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.).  Sporadically and/or while on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, boxes, cases, files, and/or luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs.  (Assistance may not always be available.)
