Position Purpose

The Assistant Director, Learning Design ( ADLD ) is a leader within the team responsible for supporting learning across Dartmouth College. In collaboration with the Senior Director, the Assistant Director provides strategic vision, roadmaps, and design goals for the Learning Design and Innovation ( LDI ) team. Additionally, the ADLD ensures that the LDI team operates within a culture of innovation, providing excellent services in the fields of faculty development and course development for both in-person and online teaching. The ADLD is responsible for aligning Dartmouth’s learning designers’ contributions with these goals by managing a team that establishes inclusive and accessible design practices

  • Master’s degree in education.
  • Minimum 5 years working in a higher education environment supporting teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated teambuilding and leadership skills in a cross-functional, collaborative environment.
  • Extensive experience in the fields of faculty development and online learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with faculty to design and develop learning experiences that are student-centered and grounded in appropriate pedagogical principles.
  • Experience developing strategies and plans for online learning and faculty development projects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of principles of inclusivity in teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage projects and events under tight deadlines and quality standards.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in application of ADA , 508 compliances to pedagogical and educational technology tools
  • Commitment to constant evaluation, innovation, and improvement of methods, practices, and processes.

Key Accountabilities



  • Works with leadership to promote cross-team communication and collaboration, create processes, and design services.
  • Works directly with project leadership and collaborators on projects, offering management input to implement emerging technologies and pedagogical practices. Ensures responsible project management techniques are used by team members, communicates status with responsible stakeholders.
  • Represents fiscal needs to ITC leadership by identifying opportunities for improved fiscal planning and ROI .
  • Actively collaborate with different departments and teams to align learning objectives and initiatives across various disciplines.
  • Implement and refine communication channels for efficient cross-team collaboration, fostering an environment that encourages idea-sharing and collective problem-solving.

Learning Design

  • Sets, follows, and ensures quality standards for Dartmouth Learning Design practices (consultation, online learning development) through mastery of pedagogy and platform.
  • As a member of the team, serve as an academic resource, technology, and special projects contributor.
  • Lead research and development efforts to enhance learning design practices, including exploring new pedagogical approaches and learning technologies.
  • Oversee the creation, evaluation, and enhancement of curricula for both in-person and online courses, ensuring they meet high-quality standards.
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance educational materials and resources to meet evolving pedagogical needs and learning outcomes.

Staff Management

  • Manages HR workflows, hires, supervises, develops work assignments, mentorship and evaluation plans for learning designers and senior learning designers.
  • Maintains a positive and collaborative culture through design and implementation of professional growth programs for the LDI team.

Project Management

  • Aids in the creation of project management plans, tracking project tasks, communicating with all participants, and conducting retrospectives.
  • Ensures alignment of project plans with institutional objectives and educational strategies.
  • Efficiently allocate resources and manage project timelines, ensuring deliverables are met within stipulated timeframes and budgets.
  • Identify and mitigate project-related risks through proactive analysis, adapting strategies as needed to ensure successful project completion.
