As a member of the Lowe’s leadership team, the Assistant Director for Learning, Engagement, & Technology (ADLET) directs  one of the museum’s three principal operational units (Learning, Engagement, & Technology; Collections & Exhibitions; Business & Operations), providing vision, leadership, strategic and tactical oversight, managerial support, supervisory oversight, and collegial guidance for the museum’s  department of Learning, Engagement, & Technology (DLET), including direct reports, interns and volunteers. The ADLET reports directly to the Lowe’s Director and works closely with the other departmental units, both at the Lowe and across UM’s three campuses, to further the museum’s mission, advance its vision, and promote its values through programs and experiences designed to support and sustain a diverse range of constituencies on their individual journeys of learning, engagement, and enrichment through art, education, culture, and technology. To that end, the ADLET leads a team of professional educators, interns, and volunteers to create, implement, and assess creative, enriching, and strategic tours, programs, events, and workshops to further the museum’s commitment to targeted outputs and associated outcomes. Supervises Senior Event Planner and Communication Specialist.

Leadership

  • Serves as an active and engaged member of the Lowe’s leadership team.
  • Supports the work of the Lowe’s Director by, among other things, actively participating on the museum’s Strategic Planning and Reflection Committee; serving as the Director’s ex-officio deputy on the Lowe Faculty Advisory Committee as required; representing the Director at public events as required; and engaging with the Lowe Advisory Council as well as other museum supporter/donors/sponsors as required.
  • Serves as a Lowe ambassador, both on UM’s campuses and throughout the broader community.
  • Creates and sustains consistent excellence and ensures superlative results for all Learning, Engagement, and Technology activities at the museum.
  • Remains abreast of field-wide trends, ensuring the Lowe is not only in alignment with best practices but also seen as a leader in the field.
  • Models exemplary behavior by adhering to all museum and University policies and procedures.
  • Safeguards all University assets, ensuring that the entire unit does the same.

Administration

  • Develops comprehensive learning and engagement goals that are in alignment with the Lowe’s mission, vision, and values as well as its strategic and operational plans.
  • Develops realistic, actionable tactics that are in alignment with the Lowe’s operational plan and designed to fulfill the DLET’s stated objectives.
  • Actively supervises and supports all direct reports and their associated responsibilities, tasks, and duties.
  • Monitors—and proactively adjusts as required—the DLET’s workflows, timelines, processes, practices, and protocols to ensure maximum efficiency and impact.
  • Monitors and supports the professional growth and development of the DLET’s team members.
  • Monitors and sustains the DLET’s morale, addressing identifiable concerns and/or issues as soon as they arise; this includes involving the Director, Business Operations Manager, and/or UM HR as required.
  • Supervises and, when required, manages and executes, all learning and engagement programs including, but not limited to, lectures, workshops, events, and tours.
  • In collaboration with the DLET’s team as well as others (including external consultants, as required) refines, in a manner that is impactful and iterative, the Lowe’s audience feedback and assessment mechanisms, from gathering and analyzing such information to creating data-driven, actionable items and impactful results.
  • In collaboration with the Lowe’s Director and Business Operations Manager, develops and carefully monitors the DLET’s budget.
  • Identifies and actively pursues grant-funding opportunities specific to DLET; ensures that direct reports do the same and/or contribute in meaningful, productive ways to the Lowe’s grant reporting efforts.
  • Supports the Director on special projects, as required.

Engagement & Learning

  • Productively collaborates with Lowe colleagues, including, but not limited to, Curatorial & Exhibition Services, Events, Membership, and Communications, to realize mission-centric, vision-aligned strategic goals and objectives.
  • Ensures that the Lowe maintains productive, mutually beneficial relationships with Beaux Arts through BA and/or Lowe educational initiatives and engagement -focused projects.
  • Ensures that the Lowe maintains productive, mutually beneficial relationships with UM faculty and students through relevant, impactful tours, programs, and learning and engagement-focused initiatives.
  • Ensures that the Lowe maintains productive, mutually beneficial relationships with school and community groups through relevant, impactful tours, programs, and learning and engagement-focused initiatives.
  • Works closely with DLET team to recruit and train docent volunteers and museum interns.
  • Oversees the research, production, and dissemination of education and engagement materials, for both in-gallery and digital use; these materials should be created in collaboration with Curatorial & Exhibition Services and Communications staff as appropriate.
  • Develops, implements, and oversees public programs, public tours, professional development workshops, and/or wellbeing programs, in collaboration with DLET and/or other Lowe staff as appropriate.
  • Ensures that audience and assessment data (both quantitative and qualitative) is collected, analyzed, shared, and leveraged to inform and improve both DLET and museum-wide operations.

Technology                 

  • Oversees, at a supervisory level, the public-facing and internal technological systems and digital projects for the Lowe Art Museum, including, but not limited to, the creation of digital assets related to the Lowe’s collections and/or exhibitions.
  • Works with Curatorial & Exhibition Services, Communications, and other staff to ensure that the Lowe’s website and online collections database are consistently updated and functioning optimally.
  • Ensures, at a supervisory level, that all in-gallery engagement tools, regardless of format (analogue vs. digital) and/or target audience, are impactful, in alignment with the Lowe’s strategic priorities and brand identity, within approved budget, and fully compliant with all Lowe/UM policies.

Minimum Qualifications                                                                      

  • Master’s Degree
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered
