AI in Learning & Development

Guest Speakers: Fatenah G. Issa, Matt Crosslin & Karen Nix Instructional Designers Orbis Education

Session Description

While artificial intelligence (AI) tools seem ubiquitous in higher education use, vetting procedures must be in place to ensure FERPA compliance. AI tools depend on data, which many users submit without consideration of how that data is used. As with any online tool, vendors must explicitly share how user data is stored and any plans for use. It is wise for users to review the terms before blindly clicking “I approve.” As instructional designers may play a role in AI tool identification, the webinar intends to discuss and educate regarding how these tools gain permission, store, and utilize user data. This applies to faculty, student, and instructional designer usage.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore AI data permissions granted by users.
  • Interpret AI data usage.
  • Discuss data storage practices of at least one AI tool.
  • Evaluate the impact of AI data policies against FERPA.
