Job Description

Online courses teaching complex material can't simply be cranked out with a template. The designer must help translate the subject matter into an active learning experience which is presented in a meaningful and achievable way.

(1) The software programmer's "layer model" is useful for organizing complex learning. For example, when designing a course, components of the course can be separated into layers such as the information, user interface, active learning activities, etc. to meaningfully plan how each layer will support the student in achieving the learning goals.
(2) During design, the designer and subject matter expert may address a series of questions to explore how the learner will engage with the content--and with other learners.
(3) In this way a graduate-level course in economics can be made meaningful to the student who is not yet able to understand a list of technical concepts.
(4) Similarly, abstract cognitive learning outcomes and course objectives can be expressed in a powerful question students explore through a series of projects while acquiring lasting 'habits of mind'.
