Position Summary

The Instructional Development Specialist (Instructional Technologist) uses skills of multimedia development and instructional design to help shape learning experiences in online and hybrid environments. This role collaborates with project teams and subject matter experts while individually producing a range of interactive, web-based tools to promote student engagement and learning.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create a variety of relevant, engaging learning activities and assessments for student use in a Learning Management System (Blackboard Ultra). Translate learning objectives performance requirements into learning products with a focus on developing processes, content, and materials that support learning and instructors. Update, revise, and curate existing course elements to meet specifications. Provide revision recommendations. Build the instructional integrity of development projects through systematic creation, testing, and refining of assets. Ensure that curated content complies with institutional policies and industry standards for ADA/ WCAG compliance and Copyright Law.
  • Collaborate with project teammates, including instructional designers, subject-matter-experts, and media specialists.  Communicate with project stakeholders to ensure project scope, goals and objectives are being met; Provide support in the incorporation, planning and production of media resources including storyboards, scripts, micro-lectures, narrative vignettes, and other new media.
  • Assist with evaluation initiatives to ensure quality of instructional assets.
    Generate and disseminate reports based on user interactions with learning assets. Form recommendations for improving instruction based on data. Support the coordination of quality assurance processes for learning assets to meet the highest standards of quality.
  • Establish online design and development processes and standards for existing and future offerings. Create related documentation for unit use. Serve as an LMS expert. Identify, analyze, and recommend potential updates and new technologies related to innovative instruction, authoring tools, and multimedia development. Assist with updating and refining system functionality and documentation including recommending tool upgrades to the development team.
  • Support UIC staff and partners with training and professional development opportunities for instructors to learn about technology enhanced learning and online course development. Establish rapport with staff across UIC units to facilitate collaborative problem-solving and solutions. Assist in communicating the Studio’s services to the university community by providing content and creating resources for both website and newsletter communications.
  • Stay up-to-date on the use of applications and emergent technologies that support the learning process as well as institutional policies and industry standards for ADA / WCAG compliance.  Remain current with and incorporate the latest industry technology tools and trends in online education and instructional media. 

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • A. Master’s degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy AND  Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching or;
  • B. Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities  AND Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Mayer’s Theory of Multimedia Learning and of leaning engineering methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience using instructional authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Camtasio) to design and create learning materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with course authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Suite, Adobe Captivate, Blackboard Ultra, and LMS 3rd party tools).
  • Customer support experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in current and emerging instructional pedagogies, adult learning theories, learning outcome assessment and the application of Instructional Design strategies and models such as Learning Engineering and ADDIE.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, developing, supporting and recommending in consultation with faculty, various active learning strategies and potential technology enhanced learning solutions.
  • Knowledge of video production design documents and their functions (e.g., scripts, and storyboards).Knowledge of accessibility standards, and ADA compliance.
  • Familiar with Adobe Suite programs and their capabilities.
  • Familiar with data analysis and learning analytics.
  • Innovates with technology to optimize teaching and learning experiences. Familiar with video production equipment and video editing software, including Camtasia.
  • Uses HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to enhance learning environments and authoring tools.
  • Ability to translate complex information into learning assets that support mastery of learning objectives.
  • Competency in planning and managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Competency in coordinating project responsibilities among teammates.
  • Proficiency in customer support, client communications, and building relationships with faculty and subject matter experts
  • Competency in quickly mastering new and emerging tools and technologies.
  • Works collaboratively on various tasks in a video production environment.
  • Proficiency in solving problems, think creatively, and work collaboratively
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft 360 Suite
