Job Description

As part of the University Technology Office Budget and Finance Team, the Financial Analyst will perform detailed cost and financial analyses for mainly personal services but may include other portfolios/projects. Will develop and interpret detailed cost accounting information and makes recommendations regarding the efficient utilization of resources and the proper accounting for transactions. This position exercises discretion and creativity as to work details on assignments of a varied, diverse and difficult nature. And also assists in solving complex technical problems in areas where no precedent exists.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related area (or a Bachelor’s degree with advanced accounting coursework) AND two years of auditing, cost accounting and/or financial analysis experience; OR, Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration AND one year of auditing, cost accounting and/or financial analysis experience; OR, six years of progressively responsible and diverse accounting experience and coursework; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in conducting management studies, system analyses and financial analyses
  • Knowledge of accounting principle, practices and procedures for forecasting, budget entry, reallocation and tracking of position funding
  • Workday application experience, Access database and Peoplesoft navigation

Essential Duties

  • Perform specific tasks related to departmental personal services budget monitoring, including identifying cost centers and their related expense.
  • Track overall spend for the University Technology departments personal services budget and identify variances from forecasted figures.
  • Monitor compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Provide technical assistance in the design of reporting systems and related forms and documents.
  • Perform specialized financial or cost analyses related to personal services.
  • Assist in reviews of financial and internal controls to determine whether such controls are adequate to meet management objectives and ensure the safeguarding of assets.
  • Perform specific tasks related to reviews of management practices and policies.
  • Recommend changes to enhance operating efficiencies.
  • Develop forecast models based on actual and expected personal services costs to be used for budgeting in current and future years.
  • Update and maintain monthly, semi-annual and annual personal services reports including, but not limited to, salary savings, position funding, position tracking, student worker hours/rates,
  • Create ad hoc complex management reports for personal services, experience/skills in query building necessary including accessing, running, filtering, exporting and creating inquires for reports
  • Use Excel capability such as Pivot tables, Vlookups, If and SumIf formulas and other complex numerical calculations
  • Pay attention to detail for large and complex datasets
  • Take responsibility for fostering culture, advancing our values, and championing engagement in all its forms — collaborating across our teams as well as participating in UTO/ASU events and programs.
