This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for exciting one-year Internships in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience to help them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will provide recent college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with an in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives while participating in a developmental and training cohort with peers.

Internship

Over the course of a year, Interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County’s efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public-sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.

Program Participation 

  • We anticipate filling these positions to begin between July 1, 2023, and September 1, 2023 depending upon the needs of the assigned agency.  
  • Interns must be ready to begin employment by September 1, 2023.
  • This is not a fully remote opportunity.
  • Interns are expected to participate in both in-office work assignments and as part of an in-person training cohort.

  • E-Learning Instructional Design Intern
  • Human Resources Department 

The eLearning Intern in the centralized Human Resources Department of Arlington County Government will be responsible for providing support to the Training and Organizational Development team by aiding in the planning, design, and maintenance of training resources. The Intern will learn to effectively build a variety of training materials, including eLearning courses, job aids, tutorial videos, and other multimedia while discovering how Training and Organizational development can be used to drive employee engagement.

Under the direction of a mentor, this Intern will assist with the following:

  • Assessing training needs and using adult learning principles to develop appropriate educational resources;
  • Creating a variety of training materials including eLearning courses, job aids, tutorial videos, and other multimedia;
  • Working with OD Team to develop the County’s career development site, mentorship programs, 360 feedback, and cohort programs;
  • Researching, designing, reviewing, testing, and deploying online training resources; and
  • Working with departments to provide actionable team building opportunities.

Selection Criteria

Minimums: Recent, 2022 and/or 2023 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the internship will have:

  • Preferred minimum GPA of 3.0
  • No significant professional-level work experience (less than one year) in internship field. 
  • Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program related to the internship must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours 
  • *Any time lapse between earning degrees may not include significant professional-level work experience.  

Degree Requirements: Training & Development, Organizational Development, Business Administration, Liberal Arts, Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning, or related field.

Desirables:  Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following.

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred.  Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; 
  • Experience with Articulate or Adobe Captivate.
  • Degree or Certificate program in eLearning, instructional design, graphic design, digital communications, education and/or
  • Previous experience or coursework in one or more of the following areas: eLearning instructional design, graphic design, multimedia production, or digital marketing.

Special Requirements

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator’s license from the applicant’s place of residence or the applicant must have the ability or willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, copy of the applicant’s official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.

You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information

  • Work Hours:  40 hours per week.  A flexible schedule during the core work hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the ability for partial telework.
  • This is not a full-time remote opportunity.
  • Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency as well as to attend in-person classroom training.
